Stuttering is common and treatable. The earlier we start, the more effective therapy tends to be — and it can be woven gently into everyday talking.
About stuttering
Stuttering can look like repeating sounds or words, stretching sounds out, or getting “stuck” (a block). It usually emerges between 2 and 4 years, can come and go, and is nobody's fault. The good news: early intervention in the preschool years is highly effective.
Signs you might notice
- Repeating sounds, syllables or whole words (“b-b-ball”)
- Stretching sounds (“ssssoup”)
- Pauses or moments of being “stuck”
- Physical tension, blinking or facial movement when talking
- Avoiding words, or frustration about talking
How we help
After a gentle assessment, we recommend the best path for your child's age. For preschoolers, the gold-standard Lidcombe Program is a parent-delivered approach we coach you through, built into everyday play and talking. For older children and teens, we use approaches that build easier speech alongside confidence and self-acceptance.
Approaches we draw on
We use the evidence-based Lidcombe Program for young children, RESTART-DCM-informed practice, and confidence- and acceptance-based strategies for school-aged children. Therapy is always paced to your child and family.
Common questions
Will my child grow out of stuttering?
Some children do recover naturally, but it's difficult to predict, and waiting can mean missing the most effective window. Early assessment lets us monitor or treat at the right time.
What is the Lidcombe Program?
It's a well-researched, parent-led therapy for young children who stutter. With our coaching, you deliver supportive feedback during everyday talking, and we adjust together each week. Many preschoolers respond very well.
Did I cause my child's stuttering?
No. Stuttering has neurological and genetic roots — it isn't caused by parenting, anxiety or anything you did. Our job is to support both your child and you.
